What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied to metals as a dry powder. The main purpose of powder coating is to protect the surface of an object from corrosion and wear. Powder coating is also used to improve the appearance of an object by providing a glossy finish.

Powder coating is a way to coat and seal metals and an alternative to paints and other coating methods of sealing. Powder coating is applied to metals that can hold an electrostatic charge and high heat. For this reason, it is mainly applied to metals such as copper, brass, steels, bronze, titanium.

Other materials, such as wood, plastic, MDF, and glass can be powder coated too with additional preparation, and if the material can withstand high temperatures while in the curing oven.

Why is powder coating used?

Powder coating is used in a variety of industries for a number of reasons. One of the most common reasons powder coating is used is because it provides a durable and long-lasting finish. Powder coating is also resistant to chipping, scratching, fading, and wearing down over time.

Another reason powder coating is used is that it is an environmentally friendly option. Powder coating does not produce any hazardous fumes or waste, and the powder that is not used can be recycled.

Powder coating is also a cost-effective option, as it requires less material and labour than other methods of finishing.

Uses of powder coating

As previously mentioned, powder coating is resistant to chips, scratches and wearing down. For this reason, powder coating is used for lots of outdoor furniture, such as bike stands, benches, bins, etc. This is done to help them withstand the harsher weather conditions.

Additionally, many aeronautic and vehicle parts are powder coated so they better withstand high temperatures and corrosion. Household items such as lawnmowers, tool housings, brakes, wheels, and car bumpers also benefit from powder coating.

Other uses include metals to help protect against weathering in architectural structures such as bridges and buildings.

What are the benefits of powder coating?

There are many benefits to powder coating. Powder coating is typically applied to metal objects, such as car parts, metal furniture, and even some types of appliances.

One of the main benefits of powder coating is that it provides a long lasting and durable finish. Powder coating is also resistant to chipping, scratching, fading, and wearing down over time. This makes it an ideal option for objects that will see a lot of wear and tear.

Another benefit of powder coating is that it is an environmentally friendly option. Powder coating does not produce any hazardous fumes or waste, and the powder that is not used can be recycled.

Powder coating is also a cost-effective option, as it requires less material and labour than other methods of finishing.

How to powder coat metal

Powder coating metal is a relatively simple process. First, the object to be coated must be cleaned and prepped. This usually involves removing any rust, dirt, or other debris from the surface of the object.

After this, the metal must be prepped. The pre-treatment involves applying a conditioner to set the surface pH level and lock it in. Next, a corrosion barrier will be applied, usually zinc phosphate, iron phosphate, or zirconium. The piece will then be rinsed, and a sealant will be applied. The object will then need to be rinsed again and allowed to dry completely.

Next, the object is placed in an electrostatic spray booth. The powder is then applied to the object using an electrostatic gun. The powder adheres to the object due to the electrostatic charge.

Once the object is coated, it is placed in a curing oven. The high temperatures in the oven cause the powder to melt and flow, creating a smooth and consistent finish.

After the object has cooled, it is then ready for use.
